2004 Season

  • 399 people raced in one or more of the 6 races, totalling 1090 runs:
    Runners Runs
    Dragons Running Club 51 121
    Harrogate H&AC 38 107

    R&ZH 21 48
    Skipton AC 13 27
    Swaledale RR 63 184
    Thirsk & Sowerby H 48 116
  • On average we had 182 runners per race (190 in main League races):
    1 Skipton 200
    2 Starbeck 208
    3 Otley 182
    4 Thirsk 190
    5 Richmond 168
    6 Ripon Handicap 142
  • Again this year the handicaps were based on speed over the season.
This created some discrepancies as some courses were certainly slower than others (and maybe some courses need re-measuring?)
Perhaps we should have reverted to the 2002 system where performances in each race were measured against some constant – in 2002 we used
Ian (steady as a rock) Fisher as that constant.
There was an opportunity for manual adjustment of the spreadsheet-calculated handicaps, but few clubs took it.
And at the end of the day the 113 timed runers finished within a 4 minute range (well done again to Ripon’s results recorders!).

2003 Season

  • 381 people raced in one or more of the 5 races:
    Dragons Running Club 44
    Harrogate H&AC 36
    Ilkley Harriers AC 82
    Nidd RR 22
    Otley AC 42
    Ripon Runners 41
    R&ZH 20
    Skipton AC 17
    Swaledale RR 40
    Thirsk & Sowerby H 37
  • On average we had 180 runners per race (201 in main League races):
    1 Harlow Carr, Harrogate 223
2 Denton, Ilkley 229 (a new League record)
    3 Otley 168
    5 Thirsk 184
    6 Ripon Handicap 95
  • This year the handicaps were based on speed over the season.
There was no manual adjustment to the spreadsheet-calculated handicap (there wasn’t time to think between the Thirsk and Ripon races!).
Discounting the first and last finishers, all finishers were within a 10 minute range, and about 90% of you finished within a 6 minute range
(well done again to Ripon’s results recorders!).

2002 Season

  • 348 people raced in one or more of the 6 races:
    Harrogate H&AC 56
    Ilkley Harriers AC 78
    Nidd VRR 18
    Otley AC 39
    Ripon Runners 27
    R&ZH 42
    Skipton AC 16
    Swaledale RR 39
    Thirsk & Sowerby H 33

Together they raced over 5,111 miles (and goodness know how many sandwiches they ate in the post-race suppers)

  • On average we had 160 runners per race:
    1 Denton,Ilkley 220
    2 Harlow Carr, Harrogate 189
    3 Starbeck 175
    4 Thirsk 150
    5 Hudswell 136
    6 Ripon Handicap 96
  • Ian Fishers’s average speed over races 1-5, used in calculating handicaps, was 5.06 minutes per mile (in the 5 races
he varied between 4.92 and 5.13 minutes/mile). This predicted a handicap race time of 28:54, his actual 29:14
    (5.11 mins/mile) got him 8th place.
  • The handicaps were based on speed at each race relative to the winner, then averaged over the races done.
There was no manual adjustment to the spreadsheet-calculated handicap. (No inducements were offered, alas).
Although there seemed to be plenty of (expected, characteristic of runners) grumbling about individual handicaps,
in the end, all finishers were within a 10 minute range, and about 90% of you finished within a 5 minute range
(well done to Ripon’s results recorders!).
