HDSRL 2007 race #2 - Richmond, The POND DALE Five

Thursday 17th May, Start 7.45pm
Organised by Richmond & Zetland Harriers

The venue is the village of Gilling West, a regular finalist in both the Yorkshire in Bloom and the best kept Village competitions. Gilling West is approximately 3˝ miles north of Richmond - take the A6108 Darlington Road to the Gilling Road roundabout and then branch left onto the B6274 signed to Gilling West. From the south, go north on the A1, past the Catterick and Brompton-on-Swale junctions, to Scurragh Lane (signed to Skeeby & Richmond) and turn left, be careful with the sharp right bend, go to the A6108, go right ahead and then left ahead, at the Z-bend-junction, onto Sedbury Back Lane (unmarked except for our sign) for 2 miles and you're into Gilling West. If you miss the Scurragh Lane turn, continue to Scotch Corner then take the A66 (signed to the Lake District) for a couple of miles until you see the sign for Gilling West on your left, turn left, go down the hill and Gilling West is at the bottom.
This second option is also the easiest way back to the A1 as there is no right turn, south from Scurragh Lane.

Runners should give way to residents and park prettily!

There will be car parking on and adjacent to the cricket field at the north end of village which will be signed or marshalled.

There are changing and toilet facilities at the Village Hall plus additional toilets at The White Swan.

The course is different to previous years but is an accurate 5 miles, measured with a wheel.
The start is at the south end of the village at Waters Lane; runners should gather here to warm-up off the B6274 and prepare for the start at 7.45 pm.
The usual rules apply - follow the instructions of the Police and/or the Marshalls and run on the left-side of the road at all times unless told otherwise. There will be Marshalls at all necessary points plus the North Yorkshire Constabulary and Ambulance Service where appropriate.

Runners pass the War Memorial, The White Swan and The Angel, go over the Beck and out of the village. A sharp left, following the B6274 Forcett Lane, pass the cricket field to a left fork onto Hartforth Lane, a minor road. Pass the Hartforth Hall Hotel to the next junction and turn left again onto another minor road signed to Whashton. After a quarter mile take a right turn onto a rough farm road towards Grange Farm, then climb and follow the bends, left and right, towards Pond Dale Farm (by kind permission of Mr Tim Westgarth) before a right turn onto a concrete road. The concrete road leads to Warrener Road and a right turn, marshalled across the road, south (to the high point of the course, 475 feet above sea level, having climbed approximately 175 feet) and back towards Gilling West. Warrener Road becomes Hartforth Lane and the loop is complete. Just prior to the B6274 junction, cross to the right-hand side of the road, stay right along Forcett Lane and enter the cricket field via a narrow break in the stone wall.
The final quarter-mile “sprint” is on grass around the perimeter of the field.

There are no showers but there is excellent hospitality and refreshments at The White Swan
